If you're heading out of town this Memorial Day Weekend, or if you're just headed to the grocery store, you need to buckle up. That's because Alabama's "Click It Or Ticket" safety campaign has officially begun, and will be running for the next few weeks..

Officials say that the purpose of the campaign is to promote awareness and safety, and to help reduce fatalities on our roads. They also say that extra law enforcement will be out patrolling our streets, and ensuring that drivers and their passengers are buckled up.

According to researchers at the University of Alabama's Center for Advanced Public Safety, drivers and passengers who don’t buckle up are 40 times more likely to die in a wreck than those who do buckle up. Researchers also found that a majority of accidents happen within 25 miles of your home. Which is why they stress the importance of buckling up not just for long trips, but for short ones too.

So, wherever you're traveling this extended holiday weekend, please make sure that everyone in your vehicle is buckled up.
