The Delta Sigma Phi fraternity chapter at The University of Alabama will be shut down for two years after multiple violations of policies during the past academic year. according to an announcement released on Friday, June 1, 2018, by the fraternity’s national headquarters and U of A.

According to a joint statement released by the Delta Sigma Phi national headquarters  and The University Of Alabama, violations included alcohol infractions, risk management and new member education. As worded by the statement:

“Delta Sigma Phi headquarters, alumni volunteers and the University of Alabama worked to remedy these concerns; however, it was determined that maintaining the chapter in its current status would not be advisable, and that it is in the best interest of the Beta Kappa Chapter to temporarily halt operations.”

The Delta Sigma Phi chapter will have an opportunity to return to the U of A in the Fall Semester of 2020 as part of a redevelopment phase. However, certain requirements must be met, which include:

• Implementation of written new and active member education programs

• Maintaining a GPA at or above the men’s average at UA

• Hiring a full-time house director to live in the chapter house

• Recruiting and maintaining a trained collegiate chapter advisory board consisting primarily of people who live within reasonable commuting distance to campus.

Delta Sigma Phi's national office and The U of A both expressed optimism in the joint statement, which further read, “We are confident that, through the collaborative efforts of the national fraternity, the university, and local alumni, a strong and vibrant chapter will return to campus.”
