Smith won the award over Clemson's Trevor Lawrence, Oregon State's Gloire Amanda and Iowa's Luka Garza.

He adds this award to his litany of honors from the past season. Smith won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, the AP National Player of the Year award, Walter Camp and The Sporting News Player of the Year award, the Roy F. Kramer Athlete of the Year as well as the Biletnikoff Award and the Paul Hornung Award. Smith also was a unanimous First Team All-American and SEC Offensive Player of the Year.

He completed his Alabama career as the career leader in receptions (235), receiving yards (3,965) and receiving touchdowns (46).

He was also nominated for the ESPY for Best Record-Breaking Performance for his efforts in the CFP National Championship game. In just over a half of play, Smith hauled in 12 receptions, a CFP title game record, for 215 yards and three touchdowns. Russell Westbrook won the category for breaking Oscar Robertson's triple-double record.

Alabama's 2020 team won its 18th national championship with an undefeated 13-0 record. The Tide was nominated for Best Team but lost the category to the Super Bowl winning Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
