As We Enter Tornado Season, Hurricanes Aren't Going Away

2020 has been a very interesting year, to say the least.  In addition to everything going on with the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been an active weather year as well.  Currently, we are still in the midst of hurricane season and secondary tornado season for our area is not too far away.

Hurricane Season – June 1st – November 30th

The Director of the National Hurricane Center, Ken Graham, took to the YouTube channel for the National Hurricane Center to remind us all that “We are in the heart of the season.” Graham also reminds us all to be prepared, have a plan, be able to get information, listen to your local officials, and have enough supplies.

We have had an active hurricane season.  Currently, there is Hurricane Teddy and tropical depression 22, that has the potential to become a tropical storm.  Recently, we had Renee, Sally, Tropical Storm Vicky, Invest 90L, Invest 98L, and Invest 99L.  We will be sure to bring you updates that affect the Alabama coast and the state of Alabama.  Also, Graham gives us a reminder that he urges “everyone to realize it’s busy already; we still have a ways to go.”

Alabama’s Secondary Tornado Season

Fall severe weather season in Alabama typically runs from November until mid-December.  However, at times it fluctuates; it could run from late October until December (even late December).  According to the National Weather Service Birmingham, “in 2015, widespread flooding impacted Central Alabama during the period of December 23 – 25.  In addition to the flooding, 4 tornadoes touched down on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.”   Look below for the terminology you need to know before Tornado season.

Let’s be sure we are all prepared for the rest of Hurricane season and gearing up for secondary tornado season.  Now is a great time to find out the closest storm shelter to your job and home.  Also, it is a good idea to find out now their COVID-19 guidelines.

Let’s continue to be safe during the remainder of hurricane season and for the upcoming secondary tornado season.
