We are currently in the last month of the Meteorological winter, which is December, January, and February. There has been a lot of talk about the possibility of winter weather next week. The Old Farmer’s Almanac gives a long-range weather forecast for the Deep South for February 4 – 14, 2021, as “rainy periods, quite mild.”

Since many people travel around the state, I wanted you to know about the potential for snow tonight in Northern Alabama. I believe that in any winter scenario, it is best to know that predictions could change. If you are making plans to North Alabama, the National Weather Service for Huntsville notes that there will be “rain during the day will transition to snow as temperatures drop near or below freezing this evening. Expect a dusting for portions of northeast Alabama and southern Middle Tennessee with higher amounts up to 1" along the Cumberland Plateau."

Winter Weather Potential for Next Weekend Update

It is still early in the prediction game for the end of next week. However, I always say it best to be prepared when it comes to the possibility of winter weather in the Deep South. Why? Simply put, we don’t get much of it. We will keep you updated on any changes in the forecasting.

Currently, our friends at the Weather Factory share their insight, in that “it now looks like the deterministic GFS and European models are agreeing on a cold rain across Central Alabama throughout the entire day on Friday. The GFS is showing all of the moisture out of the area by midday with none of the rain changing over into freezing rain, sleet, or snow. Much of the same story with the European as it paints all of Central Alabama dry by the midday hour. We are still very early in the game for Friday, and these models can very easily flip back to a wintry solution.”

James Spann commented on Facebook that “we will much higher confidence by tomorrow night/Monday as we get within 120 hours of the event. It remains to be seen if any part of Alabama will have ice problems.”

Again, it is early on. My advice is to check back often. I will be updating our listeners as more information develops or changes. I believe a determining factor is when the arctic air mass arrives, is it delayed to Friday night or just not make it to Central Alabama.
