Heat Index Values Could Reach as High as 109 Degrees in Alabama

There has been a theme this week, the “heat advisory” issued by the National Weather Service in Birmingham gets extended each day. Now, it runs until Friday, June, 17 until 7 p.m. 

This advisory impacts the following counties: Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Blount, Bullock, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Etowah, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Marion, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston.

Heat Index Values:

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, we can expect “heat index values of 104 To 109 in the afternoon. Not much relief at night as low temperatures stay in the low to mid-70s.”

Friday Outlook:

The Storm Prediction Center has portions of North and East Alabama under a “marginal risk” for severe thunderstorms.

Weekend Outlook: Brief Heat Break

Enjoy a brief but needed heat break this weekend in Alabama. “The heat won’t be going away anytime soon, but a nice surge of drier air will bring humidity levels down across Alabama over the weekend. Nights will be cooler as well,” said James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist.

Next Week:

Extremely hot weather returns with some areas even getting as high as 100 degrees towards the end of the week. That is actual temperatures not heat index values.

Spann said that “there could very well be a day or two with a few afternoon and evening showers and storms around, but they will be pretty scarce. Temperatures will likely remain above average through the rest of June as the upper ridge holds.”
