Holiday Cheer Road Trip To Birmingham, Alabama

In the spirit of taking road trips this holiday season with your family and friends, be sure to put Birmingham, Alabama, on your list.  A short drive from our area makes a perfect day and evening trip.  I lived in Birmingham from 1999-2013, and I have enjoyed some great holiday memories in Birmingham with my family and friends.

Here are my holiday stop suggestions:

Stop #1 – McWane Science Center’s Imax Movie Theatre

Start the early afternoon off with a movie at the McWane Science Center’s Imax Movie Theater.  To get you in the holiday spirit, be sure to check out the movie the Polar Express.  Even if you have seen the movie before, the Imax theater style is a whole experience.

Stop #2 – Lunch at the Pizitz Food Hall

Enjoy lunch at the Pizitz Food Hall.  It is walking distance from the Imax Theatre and houses 14 Food Stalls and a restaurant.  This means choices for the entire family.

Stop #3 - Polar Express Train Ride

A wonderful holiday memory was taking my parents on the polar express train ride.  It truly is a fun trip for all ages.  Right outside of Birmingham in Calera, you can find the Heart of the Dixie Railroad Museum.  Take the first train ride in the early evening so you can check out some other Magic City adventures.

Stop #4 - Zoolight Safari at the Birmingham Zoo

After your polar express train ride takes an evening walk through the Birmingham Zoo for the Zoolight Safari.  I went every year when I live in Birmingham, and it is incredible to walk through all the twinkling lights.  It’s great for holiday selfies too!

Stop #5 – Ice Skating

Then be sure to end your evening enjoying some Ice Skating at the Winter Adventure in Railroad Park.  Even if you don’t ice skate like me, it’s great for people watching.

Other great Birmingham Holiday experiences:

The Vulcan’s Holiday Light Experience, and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra “Home for the Holidays.”
