Swimmers who have visited one of Tuscaloosa's favorite swimming spots could have been exposed to E.coli this week.

ABC 33/40 News reports heavy rainfall Tuesday night resulted in a sanitary sewer overflow near JVC Road and Interstate Drive. This overflow then ran into an unnamed tributary of Cottondale Creek which then leads to Hurricane Creek.

Signs have been posted advising swimmers of the overflow and its potential dangers; however, as of yesterday ABC 33/40 reporters still observed people using the Hurricane Creek M Bend Park.

The City of Tuscaloosa is in the process of cleaning and sanitizing the area, and residents are advised to avoid the water until this has been completed. This does not impact the tapwater, as the wastewater system and water system are two completely different systems.

The City of Tuscaloosa treats over 6.5 billion gallons of wastewater annually at its wastewater plant and less than 0.03% of that volume has been lost to sanitary sewer overflows in its collection system over the last three years.
