This Saturday, Alabama's defense faced a South Carolina offense that followed a similar strategy to Vanderbilt's against the Tide last week. Alabama defensive tackle Tim Smith had a terrific performance, earning four tackles and a sack in the Tide's 27-25 comeback win over the Gamecocks on Saturday.

Smith spoke with the media following the Crimson Tide's victory this past Saturday, where the Tide's defensive tackle shared the team's mindset about how everyone has each other's "backs" and how no matter when or where the ball is on the field, the defense is only concerned with "how to get the ball off the field."

This was evident on the drive after Jalen Milroe threw a costly interception in the endzone with the Tide trailing 19-14 with 12 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and seeking to score within the Gamecocks' 15-yard line.

On the very next drive, Alabama's defense recovered a fumble on a botched read option, setting up the Tide's offense with a first down within the Gamecocks' 35-yard line, which resulted in a touchdown from Alabama, putting the Crimson Tide up 20-19 with 10:42 left in the fourth.

Tim Smith discussed the recent success opposing offenses have had against the Tide, and when asked why, Smith claimed it was the defense's fault for not "executing calls to keep them out of those positions". Smith also noted that their opponents are not doing anything "crazy," but the Crimson Tide's defense is "failing to execute the calls."

According to Smith, Alabama's victory over South Carolina was not the "dub that we wanted; it should've been a lot more dominant and physical, but a dub is a dub man".

This is a win that most Alabama fans would not want to see so close, but this is the SEC, and there is no guarantee of a victory every weekend. Alabama demonstrated to themselves that they can win in games like this, as Smith stated, "We are going to fight regardless no matter what the situation is whether we are up or down we are going to fight regardless."

Alabama will move to 5-1 on the season, looking to build on this win and improve their errors for its SEC rivals, the Tennessee Volunteers, who will host the Tide in Knoxville on Saturday, October 19th, 2024.
