LSU Returning Live Mascot for Alabama Game
Alabama will travel to LSU for a do-or-die elimination game for both teams this Saturday, November 9, at 6:30 p.m. CT.
The game means everything to both fanbases, and LSU is pulling out all the stops for the Crimson Tide, with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry advocating for the return of the live mascot to the sideline.
“I think the opportunity to bring our mascot back onto the field is an unbelievable opportunity,” Landry said at a September news conference.
According to Louisiana Sports, LSU will return the tradition of having a live Tiger in a cage on the sideline of Saturday night's game against Alabama.
There are concerns about wheeling a live tiger in front of 100,000 screaming fans. Before the tradition was ended due to the death of Mike VI in 2015, cheerleaders would invoke the Tiger to roar by pounding on the cage according to Louisiana Sports.
Mike VII, LSU's current eight-year-old live mascot, will not be the Tiger in the cage. He will be kept in his 15,000-square-foot facility across the street from the stadium.
Instead, Landry facilitated a tiger delivery from an out-of-state refuge to assume the role for Saturday night against Alabama.
The Crimson Tide and the Tigers will kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC. The radio broadcast for Alabama can be heard on Tide 100.9 and 95.3 The Bear.
