Free Meals for Kids Available at 6 Tuscaloosa County Schools This Summer

Workers will prepare and serve free meals to children at half a dozen school cafeterias across Tuscaloosa County this summer.

The Tuscaloosa County School System announced this week that their Child Nutrition Team will staff some cafeterias in June, some of which will remain open through July, and offer free, nutritious meals to all children under the age of 18.

The school system shared the following information about six sites that will begin serving meals next week.

Brookwood Elementary
Weekdays, June 5 – 29 (Closed June 19)
Breakfast: 7:30 – 8 a.m.
Lunch: 11:30 a.m. – Noon

This site is open to children 18 and under who live in areas zoned for these schools: Brookwood Elementary, Brookwood High, Brookwood Middle, Lake View Elementary, Vance Elementary. The child does not have to be enrolled in one of these schools to eat, but should live in the school zone.

Hillcrest High
Weekdays, June 6 – 27, July 10 – 31 (Closed June 19)
Breakfast: 7:30 – 8:30 a.m.
Lunch: 10 – 11:30 a.m.

This site is open to anyone age 18 and under, regardless of where they live.

Holt High
Weekdays, June 5 – 29, July 10 – 27 (Closed June 19 and all Fridays)
Breakfast: 7:30 – 9:30 a.m.
Lunch: 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

This site is open to anyone age 18 and under, regardless of where they live.

Sipsey Valley Middle
Weekdays, June 5 – 29 (Closed June 19)
Breakfast: 7:30 – 8 a.m.
Lunch: 11:25 a.m. – Noon

This site is open to anyone age 18 and under, regardless of where they live.

Tuscaloosa County High
Weekdays, June 1 – 30 (Closed Mondays), July 10 – 20 (Closed Thursdays)
Breakfast: 7:30 – 8:30 a.m.
Lunch: 11 a.m. – Noon

This site is open to anyone age 18 and under, regardless of where they live.

Walker Elementary
Weekdays, June 5 – 29 (Closed June 19)
Breakfast: 7:30 – 8 a.m.
Lunch: 11:20 a.m. – Noon

This site is open to children 18 and under who live in areas zoned for these schools: Northside Middle, Northside High, and Walker Elementary. The child does not have to be enrolled in one of these schools to eat, but should live in the school zone.

TCSS also said some school cafeterias will be open and serving free meals to students who are at various summer programs and parents should look to normal channels for information about events at their student's school. TCSS said children do not have to be enrolled in a summer learning program to eat with those who are on days during which meals are served.
