Man Asleep in his Apartment Killed by Stray Bullet, Police Say

Investigators in Tuscaloosa say a stray bullet fired during a robbery that injured two men at 301 Apartments Monday struck and killed a man sleeping inside.

Lt. Jack Kennedy, the assistant commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said officers were called to the apartment complex around 2 a.m. Monday morning, where they discovered two men had been shot during a robbery attempt after a large party there.

The two men were hospitalized as police investigated, but late Tuesday night officers were called back to the complex -- the family of a man who had not been heard from since Sunday night had discovered him dead in his own bed.

Kennedy said police believe the victim, 24-year-old Anthony Killings, had nothing to do with the altercation outside that led to his death and was simply asleep inside when a bullet fired in the parking lot pierced his wall and struck him.

Kennedy said the VCU has been working around the clock since Killings' body was discovered, interviewing witnesses and collecting new evidence.

They found probable cause to charge two men with murder, robbery, firing into an occupied dwelling and second-degree assault.

The suspects, 22-year-old Krisshod K’tyse La’Nard Fritz and Demarlio Wayshawn Robertson, 23, are both in police custody and will be booked in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on bonds of $255,000 each.
