I’m disgusted and disappointed.

A Mississippi School sent home the note below “Why Do Girls Suffer from Body Image” to the daughter of Ashley Wells Heun.

I’m enraged.

What is making me upset? It’s not the part about explaining what body image means and how positive and negative outlooks could affect you. It’s the offering of shapewear to you girls that bothers me. In my opinion, it’s creating a stage that a healthy body image involves shapewear.

Heun told USA TODAY when asked about the letter, "I had to read it a few more times, to make sure I was actually reading what I was actually reading.”

I had to do the same thing.

As a woman who has been every size under the rainbow. I’ve experienced body image issues and body shaming at a young age. I feel that I can chime in on this situation and also side with the concerned parent.

Heun makes a really good point about if her daughter begged for shapewear she “would tell her no.” In addition, she would be “concerned about her if she even asked.” Then to find out that school is “ENCOURAGING her to wear it," as she told USA TODAY.

I think we ALL have a middle school story about torture. If you don’t, consider yourself lucky. I was sent to the principal’s office because I threw an apple at a boy. It hit his head and he was dramatic. Why did I do that? He called me fat and I warned him, I would make him stop one way or the other. The apple was the stopping mechanism.

My punishment: The principal told me to go home, take off all my clothes, look at myself in a full-length mirror and understand why he called me fat.

I told my Dad. He blew a gasket. Both of my parents were at the school the next morning.

From that day forward, I made a promise to myself to never let anyone (even adults) bully me or anyone around me for being fat.

I’m glad this Mississippi mom was there for her daughter. Like my mom was there for me.
