Statistics say that one in four women in the United States will experience domestic violence.  It is important to recognize the signs of not only an abusive relationship but also the characteristics of a person who often becomes an abuser.

There’s a saying that children learn what they live. So is the case with many abusers and victims of abuse.  Those who grew up in environments where abuse was a regular occurrence often become abusive themselves or they accept abuse easier than those who did not grow up in such households.

According to Harvard Medical School, the first signs of an abusive partner include the following:

6 Signs of Domestic Abuse

These are some of the characteristics of abuse that go unnoticed until a physical altercation occurs. However, physical abuse isn’t the only form of domestic violence. All of the above items are instances of domestic abuse.

Luckily, in West Alabama, there’s an organization which works to assist victims of domestic violence and sexual assault: Turning Point!

Turning Point is the second-oldest domestic violence shelter in the state of Alabama.  It serves Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marengo, Pickens, Sumter, and Tuscaloosa counties and has helped tens of thousands of men, women, and children over the years.

According to its website, Turning Point provides direct services to over 2,000 primary and secondary victims. These services include emergency shelter, 24-hour crisis line, individual counseling, support groups, financial literacy training, children’s services, legal/court advocacy, and more.

If you are in need of assistance or you know someone who may be in trouble, call Turning Point at (205) 758-0803, email info@turningpointservices.org, or visit online at www.turningpointservices.org.
