Should we completely avoid any lettuce products?

No Caesar salads, lettuce wraps, or a crisp leaf on our burgers.

Well Consumer Reports, which is a non-profit advocacy group, says to avoid lettuce at one of our favorite burger stops.

Yes, there have been times since this latest E. coli outbreak that I could not find lettuce when shopping. Yet, lately, I haven’t had any problem finding lettuce.

Should we be concerned with this recent report?

If Consumer Reports says to not have lettuce at Wendy’s, should I be worried about all my lettuce products?  So no lettuce on my sandwiches and no salads from Wendy’s, ok got it! Well, what about every other place I go to eat that serves lettuce?

Is everyone else serving safe lettuce except Wendy’s?

Well, the reasoning Consumer Reports has pointed out Wendy’s is because they have had 37 E. coli outbreaks linked to their restaurants, and 10 people had to be hospitalized.

The CDC is looking into the recent outbreak but stated that Wendy’s food is safe just to avoid lettuce with your order.

What can we do to protect ourselves with our lettuce at home…romaine seems to be the leafy green causing this latest outbreak. Is it just Romaine? Well in the “lettuce” family, yes, but spinach and clover sprouts have also been linked to the E. coli outbreak.

So just to be safe, I will share a secret with you, don’t try to wash your greens to remove E. coli, that doesn’t help remove the bacteria. Throw it out! If you have any products that you are unsure if it’s been exposed to E. coli, better to be safe than sick.

The shelves at local stores that I have been in, are fully stocked with fresh lettuce. So stay healthy and replenish your supply at home.
