Back-To-Back Top Five Finishes For Alabama Men’s Golf
The Alabama men's golf team is giving nods to famous rapper Drake, as it has "back-to-back" finishes inside the top five of its last two tournaments. The Watersound Invitational in Panama City Beach, Florida concluded this afternoon with the Tide finishing in fourth.
Along with a top five finish, three players ended inside the top 10 individually. Thomas Ponder led the group as he finished 11 under for the tournament in a solo sixth place. Canon Claycomb and Nick Dunlap finished not far behind as they tied for fourth place. They both shot seven under for the tournament.
Unlike the John Hayt Intercollegiate, the team played consistently. Ponder kicked things off on the first day, firing a 5-under-par 67. He matched his opening score in the final round as he stayed hot throughout the event. In a similar fashion, Dunlap shot the same 3-under-par 69 on both the first and last day. Claycomb started slower than the others opening with an even 72. Although, he was able to improve each day and shot a final round 4 under.
The highlights of the rounds were the several eagles captured by the team on the third and thirteenth hole, which are par fives. Dunlap, Johnathan Griz and JP Cave were all able to capitalize on those holes.
Head coach Jay Seawell spoke about his team's performance after the tournament.
"I am really proud of our guys and I think we took another step towards getting better. There are a lot of things for us to build off and learn from. I think our guys showed improvement from our first tournament in the spring. We are going to need to continue to improve to get to the top of leaderboards like playing consistent throughout, but we certainly finished on a high note. So, we learned some lessons that we will take and try to get better on and are looking forward to getting back to work and preparing for a terrific another strong field at the Cabo Collegiate in two weeks," said Seawell.
With the back-to-back top five finishes, the No. 17 ranked Crimson Tide will look to keep up the positive play as they head to Los Cabos, Mexico for the Cabo Collegiate. Play begins in Mexico on March 5 - 7.
