Legendary Former Alabama QB Passes Away

The University of Alabama mourns the loss of a legendary quarterback and a former AD as well.

Steve Sloan, a two-time national champion quarterback and All-American, and two-time second-team All-SEC has passed away at the age of 79.

Sloan was the starting quarterback for Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant during two of the Tide's national championship runs in 1964 and 1965 while Joe Namath was dealing with injury in the 1964 season.

Sloan had a strong career after his playing days were over with the Crimson Tide. He spent two seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons, then returned as an assistant coach to Alabama. After serving as an offensive coordinator for two seasons with Florida State and Georgia Tech, respectively, Sloan went on to become the head coach of Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, and Duke. He ended his coaching career as the offensive coordinator at Vanderbilt in 1990.

From 1987 to 1989, Sloan served as the athletic director at Alabama between coaching jobs. After his lone year coaching the Commodores, Sloan went back to being an AD with North Texas, UCF, and ended his tenure with a 2002-2006 run with Chatanooga as their AD.
