Tuscaloosa City Schools to Continue Free Meals for Kids This Summer
The Tuscaloosa City Schools will continue to offer free breakfast and lunch to students in the city this summer, a program that will not be affected by the state's decision to opt out of a federal program that provided funding for summer meals for kids.
The federal government offers a program that would have provided families $40 per month per eligible child through EBT to help ensure children are fed this summer.
The state of Alabama made headlines when leaders chose not to participate in the program this year, but leaders at TCS say that decision will not affect their own summer feeding program, which is funded through separate sources.
The school system issued a clarification Wednesday to ensure parents the TCS feeding program they're familiar with will continue.
Through it, children 18 and younger can get free breakfast and lunch this summer which will be available at most school locations, although an exact list for this summer has not yet been released.
“We are serving a need in our community by offering these meals to our students, and we will continue to do so this summer,” said TCS Superintendent Mike Daria.
