Tuscaloosa Council Adopts Daytime Curfew for Minors
The Tuscaloosa City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to adopt a daytime curfew for students who skip school, according to a report in the Tuscaloosa News.
The new ordinance makes it illegal for children and teens to be unaccompanied in public from 9 a.m. until 2:30 on weekdays when city schools are in session.
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said the code is meant to deter parents from allowing their children to skip school.
When a minor violates the new curfew, their parent or guardian will be cited by the Tuscaloosa Police Department. Possible penalties include $500 fines or even up to six months in jail, although the report says first-time offenders may not be punished as harshly as the code allows.
