Whitney Houston Documentary Arriving In Theaters This Summer
It’s still hard to believe that six years ago, we lost Whitney Houston - one of the most iconic voices in pop music. Now comes word that a new documentary about the late songbird will arrive in theaters this summer.
Whitney, which chronicles the life and career of Whitney Houston, will be release on July 6 through Roadside Attractions and Miramax. The film will feature details about her life, her past live performances, unreleased tracks and home movie footage. In addition, original studio recordings of Houston’s classic songs will also appear in the movie.
Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald, who helmed the 2006 flick The Last King of Scotland, directed the movie and was given access to a treasure trove of archives from Houston’s estate.
"I approached Whitney's life like a mystery story; why did someone with so much raw talent and beauty self-destruct so publicly and painfully?" he said in a press release. "I was lucky enough to have the support of Pat Houston and the Whitney Houston estate in this quest. They entrusted me with the 'keys to the vault' while giving me complete freedom to follow the story wherever it went. At heart, Whitney is an intimate family story that reveals a new side to a woman that even her most die-hard fans never knew."
"To tell Whitney's story, you have to know her story," added Patricia Houston, the late singer's manager, sister-in-law and the executor of Houston's estate. "We could not be more excited that Whitney's fans will have this authoritative and definitive documentary chronicling the full arc or her career and the scope of Whitney's entire life."
The Whitney documentary comes one year after the Showtime documentary Whitney: Can I Be, which was publicly denounced by the estate.
