3 COVID-19 Deaths Reported at Tuscaloosa Mental Health Facility

According to WBRC, Mary Starke Harper Geriatric Psychiatry Center here in Tuscaloosa has reported the death of 3 of their patients due to COVID-19.

Last week every staff member and every resident was tested at Mary Starke Harper. Currently, there are 16 current COVID-19 cases at the mental health facility among the residents. A spokesperson confirmed that 11 staff members at the facility tested positive for COVID-19 and all are not showing symptoms. National Guard members are scheduled to clean the hospital.

I can't imagine having a family member, friend, or loved one in a mental health facility let alone pass away as a resident at a mental health facility. Mary Stark Harper Center can hold a total of 96 patients and last month measures were said to be taken to limit patients' interactions between one another. The Geriatric Psychiatry Center is divided into four units and according to WBRC, all but one of the COVID-19 cases have been limited within one unit.

The Alabama Department of Public Health has reported a total of 18,766 confirmed cases of COVID-19 statewide. The death toll is almost at 700 with 651 confirmed deaths. With the consistent increase in confirmed cases of COVID-19, many have wondered how many people have made recoveries from the virus. According to the Alabama Department of Public health dashboard, there have been 11,395 presumed recoveries from COVID-19 in the state of Alabama.
