Alabama Alumni Signs With Washington Nationals
Former Crimson Tide catcher Alex Avila has signed a one-year contract with the Washington Nationals.
Avila, who has become a journeyman in the majors over the past few years, will suit up for his sixth major league team when he steps to the plate as a National in 2021. Avila was named an All-Star in 2011 as a member of the Detroit Tigers and was a key factor in the Tigers winning the American League pennant in 2012.
Avila played at The Joe for three years for the Tide and notched a .305 batting average during his time in Tuscaloosa. In his junior year, Avila was named to the All-SEC First Team with his .347 batting average with 17 home runs.
The Nationals pitching staff consists of Max Scherzer, Jon Lester, and Patrick Corbin, all of whom are former teammates of Avila.
The 11-year veteran turns 34 this weekend, making him one of the oldest catchers in the major leagues.
