The green and white outshined the lights on a wet, humid evening in Gordo, Ala., as the Gordo Green Wave(4-1, 2-1) beat the Haleyville Lions(1-4, 0-3) 38-0 Friday evening. Haleyville, desperate to find a win and turn their season around, looked to capitalize on their opponents woes, while Gordo needed a momentum shift after last week’s loss to Northside, the first of their season.

“We went back to work,” said Gordo head coach Ryan Lolley on the preparation from last week’s loss. “A lot of times it’s easy to focus on the outside stuff, but the main focus is getting yourself better every week.”

Gordo started off sloppy, with two fumbles and a sack on their first drive, and slowly but surely, found their rhythm. QB Tanner Bailey connected with WR Kohl Summerville for a 32-yard touchdown pass on their second drive of the game.

The following drive truly showed the type of offensive power Gordo possesses. From their own 22, Bailey and the Green Wave offense pushed down the field, using two main receivers: RB Rayshawn Williams caught two receptions for 54 yards, and WR Corterius White, gaining four receptions for 25 yards, including the 5-yard touchdown rush.

That score was the last before an hour long weather delay.

Gordo came out of the delay and half looking strong; however, a promising drive, ended in three straight incompletions and forcing a 28-yard field goal to put the Green Wave up 17-0.

The offense wasn’t the only group who found the rhythm- the Gordo defense held Haleyville to three straight three and outs in the third quarter.

The star of the half, though, was Green Wave WR Lawson Neel. Neel caught three receptions for 82 yards and two TDs in Gordo’s second and third drive in the half.

However, that wasn’t it for this Green Wave offense. RB Willie Fonville rushed three times for 78 yards and a touchdown to seal the game.

“I’m proud of our guys and the way we played,” said Lolley. “We have a lot to clean up and have to do a better job of taking care of the football, and it ultimately comes down to how you practice.”

Haleyville QB Eli Musso completed 7-of-20 pass attempts for 82 yards. The Lions were held to 81 passing yards and 121 rushing yards, and five fumbles.

Next week, Gordo travels to Northridge(4-0, 2-0), and Haleyville travels to Phil Campbell(3-1, 2-0). Both games kick off at 7 p.m. CT.
