Central, West Alabama Should Prepare for a Deep Freeze This Weekend
Don’t let the next few days of temperatures trick you because much colder temperatures will arrive this weekend. Today, expect a high in the mid to upper 50s, Thursday in the upper 60s, and Friday in the mid-70s.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham said that “enough residual moisture is expected to remain Friday night that will support a changeover from rain to snow overnight with the best potential near and north of the Interstate 20 corridor.”
Info on the Deep Freeze
There will be conditions that support freezing temperatures on the mornings of Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist has given us more insight on the snow potential. He said that it “looks like there will be some light accumulation over parts of North Alabama. Amounts will be generally 1/2 to 1 inch across the Tennessee Valley (the far northern part of the state), mostly on grassy areas. Meaningful accumulation isn't expected as far south as Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, and Gadsden, but the ground could become white in a few spots.”
Travel Notes for South Alabama
Spann also noted that on Friday night the Storm Prediction Center has “defined a "slight risk" (level 2/5) of severe thunderstorms south of a line from Mobile to Phenix City, with a "marginal risk" (level 1/5) as far north as Thomasville, Prattville, and Roanoke.”
Travel Notes for the Tennessee Valley
For Saturday, Spann commented that ’ there could be a few isolated slick spots on bridges across the Tennessee Valley, but only minor travel impacts are expected there.”
