Motorists are urged to avoid McFarland Boulevard as it intersects Skyland Boulevard today while crews assess an overturned coal truck.

The incident happened just before 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. There is not a clear reason why the truck capsized, but its contents spilled out into the roadway and median right by the Motel 6 on McFarland Boulevard.

Crews have blocked off entry to all eastbound lanes of McFarland Boulevard from the Skyland intersection. Commuters will need to find a detour to get past the mess until it is cleared.

There is no word on whether there were any injuries sustained in the incident. No first responders were on the scene at the time of this article's publication.

This is not the first McFarland Boulevard closure of the day. The Alabama Department of Public Transportation announced earlier this morning that crews were expediting the installation of a second arch that will help support the weight of the Interstate 20/59 overpass.

Work was scheduled to be performed over the course of this coming weekend, but due to threats of strong thunderstorms headed to West Alabama, ALDOT pushed up the job to today. Again, motorists are expected to find alternate routes to get to any destinations surrounding this immediate area.
