When traveling out of town, it kinda defeats the purpose to eat the same foods you can get at home. Unless you’re on a very tight budget or extremely pressed for time, fast food is practically out the window.

Most of us opt in favor of local cuisine.  For instance, when you’re on the coast, at least one of your meals should be fish, shrimp, or some variation of meat from the sea…. Unless you’re a vegetarian.  In which case, you get a pass.

But have you ever been on a trip and craved a snack you’d normally eat at home?  A particular brand of chips? Or a quick on-the-go meal  to hold you over until you make it to your destination?

I had a related episode not long ago where I was on the road, and all I wanted was a Pepsi Zero and Golden Flake cheese puffs.  Couldn’t find them ANYWHERE! Then it dawned on me… The Golden Flake brand is made in Alabama!

When it came to my Pepsi Zero, as soon as we hit the state line, I was able to indulge in the sweetness that would keep me alert on the road for at least another three hours…  Although I was only an hour away from home.  Soooo, yeah…. This was one of the few times I’ve actually unpacked as soon as I made it home, thanks to the remainder of my caffeine boost.

It made me wonder…. How many of the foods, drinks, snacks, seasonings, etc. are original to Alabama?

I came up with a list of 12 and a possible.  (Yes, a possible. Spades term. Blame it on my HBCU education.)

12 Foods and Drinks Original to Alabama

Now, while each of these are authentic Alabama products, another deserves an "honorable mention."

Grapico was first sold in New Orleans in 1914, but the operation moved to Birmingham under license of Buffalo Rock by 1917.

So, the next time you're out of town, you may not be able to locate your favorites; but when you're entertaining guest from out of town, these are a few suggestions you can make to give them a true Southern experience.
